The featured bird for February is the Great Blue Heron.
The Great Blue Heron is the largest and most widespread heron in North America. It can be found along open water and wetlands through most of North America, Central America and the Caribbean.
In flight Herons can be recognized by having their long neck folded into a tight S-shape and their long legs extended. This is how you can tell them apart from flying Sandhill Cranes, which have their necks extended.
During breeding season several long black feathers will grow on the back of the crown.
